Subject: Thank you
Good morning Mr. Ryan.
On April 28th, you sent an email to the members of the Broward County School Board to ask that they reconsider their decision to eliminate two Gang Prevention Coordinator positions from the Office of Professional Standards and Special investigative Unit in the District's 2010 - 2011 budget. If you remember, one position had already been vacant since January 2009, when the person retired and it was left unfilled, and the other position was mine.
My supervisor, XXXXXXX, shared the email with me, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciated your efforts.
Unfortunately, despite your email and hundreds more from parents, students, SROs, and even the Attorney General's Office, the Board cut two Gang Prevention positions and my job was eliminated.
Last week I noticed the name "Mike Ryan" on a campaign sign while driving through my Sunrise neighborhood. I remembered your kind email and wondered if this could be the same person.
After making some phone calls, I found out that indeed you were.
This morning I went to the Tamarac Library to make sure that I voted for you early! I took my Mother, who was not planning to vote until I showed her your email. I even managed to get my sleep-deprived college student out of bed and to the polls. I told them if they didn't fill out anything else on that ballot, they had to vote for Mike Ryan. I plan to let all of my neighbors know that if they are unsure of who to vote for in the Mayor's race, I can tell them which candidate is committed to keeping their children safe at school, a valid concern in my neighborhood where families often refuse to send their children to the public schools they are assigned to.
Although I realize that my family's three votes are not going to win you the election, please know that your support for a person you never even met on that April day did not go unnoticed nor unappreciated. If I were not so busy trying to find a job to take care of my family, I would happily volunteer for your campaign. I promise I will be there when you're up for re-election.
Good luck, sir, and thanks again. Sincerely,
former Gang Prevention Coordinator

Sunrise Mayoral Candidate Mike Ryan AnnouncesEndorsement by Sierra Club
Sunrise, Florida (August 15, 2010):
Sunrise Mayoral Candidate Mike Ryan has already been endorsed by Metro-Broward Firefighters, Local 3080 (Sunrise); Broward County Council of Firefighters; Sunrise Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 80; Fraternal Order of Police, District 5 (Broward and other counties); Fraternal Order of Police, State of Florida; Sunrise Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 80-A. Today, Ryan announced he has also received the Endorsement of the Sierra Club, a nationwide environmental advocacy and educational organization.
The Sierra Club, founded in 1892, is the oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States, boasting one million three hundred thousand (1,300,000) members. The Sierra Club Broward Group serves the entirety of Broward County.
"After a full screening of the candidates, I am honored to have received the
endorsement of the Sierra Club. I organized and fought against the private
garbage transfer station, which many called "a dump". The current Mayor
supported the garbage project. I spoke out against the Everglades corporate
development project as planned. The Everglades project is planned to be built
on land that was once part of a park system. The current Mayor voted to rezone
that precious land to allow corporate development. Then, years later despite our
renewed understanding of how precious the Everglades is, he supported a
development project in the shadow of the Everglades," explained Ryan.
Ryan is well-known in the City of Sunrise for his work and advocacy on behalf of
residents, families, neighborhoods and small businesses. In addition, along withparents and school administrators, Ryan has worked in the community to
increase environmental consciousness and sensitivity.
"We must educate as many as possible regarding the serious issues involving
our environment. From water conservation to recycling of toxins and electronics,
our City should be a leader in protecting our environment," said Ryan.
Summing up, Ryan emphasized, "As the City of Sunrise, we have unique
responsibilities to so many people and communities. Our City is responsible for
a water system which is crucial to our collective future. Our City borders one of
the greatest environmental gifts in the world, the Everglades. The endorsement
of the Sierra Club is an overwhelming vote of confidence that I will appropriately
balance development interests against the overarching responsibility to preserve
and protect our environment, neighborhoods and way of life."
